The civil rights movement was a combined effort by determined African Americans across the country to gain equality under the law. As the movement grew, it expanded throughout the North, and by the late 1960s, Milwaukee became known as the “Selma of the North.” At Wisconsin Idea Spotlight: History of the Civil Rights Movement in Wisconsin, lecturer in the Department of African American Studies, Alexander Shashko, will explore the economic, political, and cultural forces that made Wisconsin a flashpoint for the fight against racial discrimination in America. A reception with refreshments will precede the program, and an audience Q & A session will follow. This is a free event, but registration is required.
The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association will hold this event in accordance with all local public health guidance. Mask usage is welcome but not required. Participants who are sick are asked to stay home to help keep our Badger community safe and healthy. If conditions require a change to this event, you will be notified via email or phone call.
